DESE Issues Transition Advisory
On July 14, 2016 the State Director of Special Education issued an advisory to help school districts provide students on IEPs with high quality transition services. You can read the entire advisory here. The advisory encourages districts to make transition services "purposeful and sequential" with the goal of being individualized and results oriented.

Settlement Agreements are Public Records
The Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, in Champa v. Weston Public Schools (SJC 11838) (October 23, 2015) recently decided that private settlement agreements between public school districts and parents, once redacted of personally identifiable information, are public records subject to disclosure. Previously, many school districts believed that disclosure of settlement agreements violated the Federal Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and its Massachusetts equivalent.

Two years ago, I wrote a blog post explaining that the Massachusetts Anti-Bullying Law does not apply to teacher-on-student bullying. But as I said then, just because the bullying law doesn't apply in this situation, doesn't mean there isn't a remedy. Instead, students and parents must consider several different causes of action.

Attorney Wong is pleased to announce that she has joined the American Diabetes Association's Advocacy Attorney Network, a group of attorneys from around the country dedicated to ending discrimination against people who have diabetes. Attorney Wong has previously advocated for clients with diabetes , and her work with the American Diabetes Association will focus on education issues.
